During labor, when a baby’s head (or presenting part) presses against the cervix and vaginal walls, the body responds with a powerful surge of oxytocin. This creates stronger, involuntary contractions that help bring baby earthside.

It’s the body’s natural “push reflex” 👉🏼often described as unstoppable and primal. Many birthing people feel an overwhelming urge to bear down, even without conscious effort.

💡 Fun fact: This reflex was first described by Sir James Ferguson in the 1940s, and it beautifully demonstrates how birth is guided by our physiology, not just willpower.
